If you've been searching for a versatile cleaning solution that can tackle even the toughest…
Best Cleaning Cloth? How One Cloth Can Change Everything.
Best Cleaning Cloth. What does that even mean?
What if one simple change in your home could help you:
- reduce waste
- cut back on harsh chemicals
- save money
- simplify cleaning
- create a healthier home
This may sound dramatic, but after 17 years of using Norwex, I truly believe one simple swap can create an incredible ripple effect.
That swap?
A superior-quality, silver-embedded reusable cleaning cloth.
More specifically, the Norwex EnviroCloth.
It may look like a simple microfiber cloth. But its impact goes far beyond wiping counters. And I dare say it’s unlike any other microfiber cloth you’ve used.
The Hidden Costs of Single-Use Cleaning
Most homes are filled with things we rarely stop to question.
Think about how many disposable or short-lived products the average household uses:
- Paper towels
- Disposable wipes
- Plastic spray bottles
- Bathroom cleaners
- Glass cleaners
- Kitchen degreasers
- Floor cleaners
- Vinegar spray bottles
- Laundry jugs
Individually, they may not seem like a big deal.
But together?
They create a surprising burden.
Plastic waste
Many cleaning products (chemical cleaners, bleach, vinegar, etc) come in plastic bottles that eventually end up in landfills.
Chemical exposure
Many of us did not read labels, nor understand which ingredients had been linked to potentially negative health impact. But in today’s world, as more and more families are being touched by autoimmune conditions, cancer, and more… it is becoming critical that we assess the “hidden” toxins that exist in most American homes. And to help us on the journey, there are organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) who have been independently doing the deep dive on ingredients for years. These ingredients can cause a compound (negative) effect in our system, as well as in our environment. Before we dive in further, I want to tell you about the EWG Healthy Living app (currently free at the time of this writing) to help you on the journey.
Financial drain
Small purchases add up quickly.
A $5 bottle here.
A $7 spray there.
A pack of wipes every week.
Over time, that becomes significant.
How One Cloth Can Replace So Much
This is where the Norwex EnviroCloth changed everything for me.
Instead of reaching for multiple cleaners, the EnviroCloth allows you to clean most surfaces using just water. Yes, you read that right—just water.
Use it damp to wipe surfaces. (Simply run it under clean water, wring it out, and wipe your surfaces!)
Pair it with a dry Norwex Window Cloth for streak-free shine (clean the surface first with the damp Enviro and then lightly dry the surface with a dry Window Cloth). (If you’d like a short background as to why these two cloths sometimes are called the “Bert and Ernie cloths” throughout the US, check out this blog article I wrote back in 2012!)
With just a cloth and water, suddenly you can clean:
- countertops
- sinks
- appliances
- bathroom surfaces
- mirrors
- windows
- stainless steel
- smooth-top stoves
…without constantly buying new bottles. That means less clutter under the sink. Less decision fatigue. Less waste. Less $$$ spent. And far fewer chemicals in your daily environment.
What About Vinegar?
I hear this often:
“But Sonya, I already use vinegar. Isn’t that natural?”
Vinegar can certainly be a better option than many harsh cleaners.
But there are still a few things worth considering.
First, it still usually requires:
- a spray bottle
- ongoing refills
- storage space
- mixing ratios
- its effectiveness has been questioned
Secondly, many families simply don’t love the smell. (That was definitely true in my house.)
Third, vinegar still doesn’t solve the issue of needing multiple products and tools.
The goal isn’t necessarily to find a slightly better bottle. Sometimes the better solution is reducing dependence on bottles altogether.
Are Norwex Cloths Made From Synthetic Material?
This is a very thoughtful question!
And the answer is:
Yes—Norwex fibers are made from synthetic materials.
Typically, microfiber is a blend of ultra-fine polyester and polyamide.
So if someone says:
“Aren’t Norwex cloths basically made from plastic?”
Norwex utilizes recycled materials to create their fiber, which keeps much plastic out of landfills. Synthetic fiber has the ability to be far more microscopic than natural fibers like cotton or wool, giving it added capabilities to mechanically clean, eliminating the need for most cleaners and disposable products. In this way, ONE cloth, can replace hundreds of plastic jugs and potentially harmful chemicals from going back into our waterways.
So the bigger question is:
What is the lifecycle impact?
A Norwex cloth is not designed to be used once and discarded.
It is designed to be used again…
…and again…
…and again.
For years. I have had my first cloth 17 years. And it still works. And over those years, it has replaced countless plastic bottles of cleaners.
So that changes the equation dramatically. Also, to date, I am not aware of any natural fiber has been identified that has the capability to mechanically remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface using only water on the cloth.
Durable vs Disposable
This is where the comparison becomes meaningful.
Would you rather use:
Option A
Hundreds of disposable products each year:
- paper towels
- wipes
- plastic bottles
- refill jugs
- packaging
OR
Option B
One high-quality, silver-embedded, durable cloth used for multiple years.
That’s the real environmental comparison.
A reusable cleaning cloth may contain synthetic fibers…
…but if it replaces hundreds (or thousands) of disposable products over its lifetime, the net impact can be dramatically better.
In other words:
The problem isn’t simply plastic. Let’s be honest, plastic has become ubiquitous in our world. What is our cell phone made from? Our keyboards? Printers? Look around you and assess how many of our everyday products are a plastic polymer. Plastic has brought incredible innovation into our world. AND… there are some downsides, too. Specifically when it comes to single-use plastic products and plastics that come into contact with our food, water, skin, etc.
So, the bigger problem is single-use waste.
Small Swaps Create Big Impact
Sometimes we think sustainability requires radical lifestyle change.
But often, the most powerful changes are surprisingly simple.
One cloth.
One swap.
One new habit.
That’s how momentum begins.
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight.
Start with one meaningful change.
Why I Still Love the EnviroCloth, what I call “The Best Cleaning Cloth”, After 17 Years
After all these years, I still come back to the same conclusion:
The EnviroCloth is one of the smartest purchases for a healthier home.
Why?
Because it helps you:
? reduces single-use waste
? reduces chemical burden
? simplifies routines & conserves space
? saves money
? saves time
? cleans effectively
And bottom line…IT WORKS better than virtually every other cleaner I’ve tried!
That’s why I say:
One cloth can change everything.
Not because the cloth itself is magical.
But because what it replaces can be enormous.
When you remove clutter, waste, and unnecessary chemicals…
you create more space for what matters.
A cleaner home.
A healthier family.
And simpler daily living.
